Balancing Your life - The Wheel Of Life Tool
Once you have examined each area and completed the balance wheel, you can see if your life is moving forward as you would like it too or expect it too. You might be surprised at the areas you shine most and those areas you need to focus more attention too. With a visual tool saying to you this is your life. You then have the option and power to say " I am satisfied with this life or I want things to improve here" whichever you choose is of coarse completely up to you and no one else needs to be aware of your life wheel. This tool can be used by everyone and anyone who wants to improve and enhance their life in any area of their life.
With a completed wheel of life you can make a plan of action in areas that need improving.
For example: if your home life is at a 5 or 50, that would mean you are halfway to being 100% fulfilled in your home environment. Each area you place on your life wheel should encompass everything within that life environment, such as, smell, visually pleasing, organized, happy, healthy, enviting, free of judgement or bias, friendly, shared responsibility, equality, supportive, encouraging, the options are endless. How you view each category is dependant on your needs and what you prioritize in each life environment.
For the example of the home life environment being at a 5 or 50, that would show you you need to examine closely why your home environment is not at 10 or 100 percent fulfilling, gratifying, joyful and supporting to you. Ask yourself what is missing? Or is there something you can identify that is hindering reaching 10 or 100% happiness? Once you identify any barriers or concerns then you can make a plan of action to correct or build up these areas by addressing each concern or barrier identified.
For example: My home life is loud and angry, there is a lot of yelling at each other...
For this concern you want to look deep at why those involved are angry and what is at the root of the yelling. What exactly is your contribution to the levels of ander and or yelling, can you be part of the solution and not the problem? Meaning can you take a new approach to communication? Yes you can decide to stay mindful of your voice and how it is coming across to whom you are speaking with, you can work at stopping yourself and using a calming technique to keep a calm demeanor and continue the discussion or take a moment to consider the reason behind the anger, is there anything you can do to assist with any distress of the parties involved? Can you be more supportive, do you need more support? Sometimes just stopping the use of negative words and or phrases in conversations can create a comforting and open dialogue one without fear of rejection, accusation or judgement. Stop using words like "stupid, dumb, idiot, useless, worthless, no good" and stop using phrases like " your no good, you never use your head, you do stupid things, that was dumb or thoughtless" Words are powerful and meaningful, once it is said you can not simply say " I didn't mean it" and expect the person to immediately be able to let it go, these words sting and are not immediately erased from the mind. When negative words are repeated enough times they can become embedded in the subconscious creating a fight or flight anxiety and stressful automatic response, and that is a whole other discussion for another post.
I used a very serious example above which shows how deep one can go using their life wheel.
You can use the wheel of life for specific areas only such as friendship, relationships, education, housing etc.
For example: you might put in each category; high school, study habits, grades, college prep, moving towards graduation, financial aid, housing and so forth. Then you can examine if you are moving forward as planned toward your educational goals, are you on tract to graduate as planned, are your study habits getting the grades you want and need in order to get into the college of your choice?
You can use the wheel of life for finances only, each category could be: saving to buy a home, raises and increased income, covering all financial responsibilities like car, electricity, insurance, etc., vacation planning, retirement planning, children's education, or family planning.
You could use the wheel of life for relationships, your wheel might look like; having enough friends, friends are lifting you up, friends are active and fun, friends have things in common, have a best friend, friends are reliable, special friend, friends will listen and not judge, friends can keep a secret. You get the idea, these are just examples, you can get as creative as you like and as simplified as you wish.
Your life wheel is all about you and only your life, of coarse it is balance in relation to the people around you and your surroundings, the total environment to which you live, or the chosen single area to put your focus. You can only choose to change yourself you cannot and should not expect to change others involved in your life unless those individuals are willing participants and supportive of a change.
