Fixing and Correcting My Children's Book art- new art style + better tools

I know when you finally get the nerve up to follow through with your idea and put color down on paper. You might stand back and look proudly on that wonderful piece of art work. As you should, it takes courage to create, design, write, illustrate, draw etc. All creativity comes from a special place within each of us. Yes, we all have it.

But if you look and think too long you might start to NOT like your work, we all do that too, we over critique ourselves right out of completing some of our works, or we just put it away and move onto something else. OK that is me. Not anymore though, I am done with feeling overwhelmed with all that is life, so much that has come my way. OK I'm veering off the artwork track, sorry. My thoughts get ahead of my.

Everybody gets side tracked with all the responsibilities in life, I completely understand. I can't even count the things I've started, stopped and never returned to over the years.
Maybe your a little like me, get bored and long for something new?  I really like NEW challenges and am finding that my children's books are not giving me that, sure each page is different, but I am not very interested in drawing the same character and same clothing and keeping each page " aesthetically pleasing" or staying cohesive throughout the pages of the book. Originally I made every page a new character, each different colors, clothes, etc. Then when I saw all my page files together, that's when I realized it looked all over the place, my eyes were overwhelmed and that is when I understood the reasoning behind keeping the subjects, characters etc. looking the same throughout your books.
Yes, I get it.

My first children's book I created in 2014, each page I did in soft pastels, I sent the files of to a local printer, I had 16 books made. I no longer have them because I overthought my artwork and got rid of each one!
A hard lesson learned, as " bits of an Artist life"
https://www.sandihester.com/

https://youtu.be/t9QDahh51dQ
I just love to binge watch her videos!

Anywho, Sandi says, " do not get rid of your works, whether you like the way it turned out or not...
Sandi is right, the good, the bad, and the ugly is all part of your art history and you should keep all of it, even if for your eyes only. If you have room of coarse, part of why I no longer have my old artworks is because I often clean out clutter, no pack rat here. That is why I no longer have old artworks. It is my dream to retire on a beach somewhere and so I do not want to have to pack up too much stuff. That being said I do wish I still had some of those works....
No crying over it though, I am always creating, moving forward and onward it's what I do. So should you. There are too many other worries in the world to bog yourself down with lost works.
You can create a little challenge for yourself and recreate some of your lost art, by memory, what fun that would be. I am looking forward to consistently sharing my videos and process with you. Though I still remain torn with my preferred work. Story telling is such fun, so is illustration, painting and designing. But the process of full color pages of children's books is so time consuming.
And on top of it, I start my new job Monday, that's in 2 days!
So much for my semi retirement and new art career. ( insert smirk here)
I will just have to be diligent and keep working towards my goals, sharing positivity, joy and happiness with all of you. Because it's good for the world.

God Bless!

How to be Happy & Stay Happy - Daily Activities to Build Happiness into Your Life

Opening my Authors copy of zine 1 of 4 Happy 365 Activity Zines.
I call these activity zines, zines instead of books because they are different than your typical activity book in that. I believe each page draws you in with the colorful pages and simple activities. I have seen some very wordy self-help, mindful activity books on the market. Some that felt like a big task to take on. And for me these were discouraging instead of feeling welcoming and encouraging. I didn't want my Happy 365 activity zine to feel like that at all. I'm not trying to dis anyone and their hard work or well-planned books. No, not at all, there is enough room for everyone and every book or zine on the shelf.

But no, you know partly why I call my activity zine a zine. I say partly because the other half of my reasoning is. I want; I demand that I get these zines out for people because everyone deserves a good, happy life. One filled with love and joy. Even in the tough times, happiness can be found and with Happy 365 showing you the tools and skills you have and need. You will create the happy life you deserve.

When a Mindful Activity Zine/Book is Too Big - Make It Four Books/Zines

This activity book is going to be too thick as in too many full color pages and too costly to make it affordable. Also, I do not want this activity book to be overwhelming when seeking to enhance and improve oneself.

Here you can see why my decision to split the Happy 365 activity book into four separate activity books or zines as I prefer to call them.

Each activity zine will contain one activity a day for 3 months or a quarter year. If you complete each book, or zine, you will have complete one year of self-improvement activities.

With these completed pages which are just over 100 pages it would be a very big book or zine. I want, I need this activity book/zine to be inviting and not intimidating. When someone, anyone picks up the
Happy 365 activity zine - Happy 365 activity book
My wish it that it draws you in with the colorful pages and easy to understand and follow activities. The activities will be fun, creative, and positive. A mindful set of tools at your fingertips.

Each page is designed to work with the tools you already have. Some skills you may not even know you have. We are built with human emotions so trust me you do have skills, the skill to love, the skill to hurt, the skill to want, the skill to move forward. You are an energy source, you just need to learn how to focus your energy on the right path for you. And how to channel your energy towards all things positive and good. You can control your emotions; you can create a future that is productive and meaningful.
With only one Happy 365 zine you can complete the activities over and over again. Look at the activities differently, complete the activities with a renewed insight, challenge yourself to try again. Grow and learn as you go. Sometimes the best way to learn is to do one simple thing at a time.

I'm So Mad, I could Just Scream!

Feeling like I'm coming apart at the seams. I could just scream!

Can you relate? There are days I really want to tell the world and everybody in it where to go. Of coarse I am not going to release my rage on the world. Why would I, only my family, those I love and those that love me, and maybe my work family really give a hoot about how I am feeling. I know this.
I also know throwing a fit only hurts those around me and will make me feel incredibly worse then before.
Managing emotions can be hard but if you start now and learn to identify what makes you angry. You will be able to better manage your feelings when something goes wrong because you an prepare and better understand what triggers your anger. Try working through some anger management tools and learn how you react and respond to stress. You deserve to be happy, and you deserve to stay calm and relaxed. So do practice self care and show yourself a little grace, forgive and move forward is a good plan. Do better and be better is a good motto.

Be Happy and stay happy

Be Happy - Practice Your Happy Face

One of the 365 days to a happier you activities is to practice your happy face. Spend time looking at yourself in the mirror making the best happy faces you can make. Think about which of your happy faces you give to different scenarios in life. As in when seeing a random person, do you smile big showing lots of teeth or do you glance up, paying no mind and keep walking? Plan to make an effort to smile often, smile big and at everyone. Even if your not sure someone sees you, smile big any way. Before long smiling will become a habit and that is what you want. Retrain your body and mind to smile and smiling will help increase joy, increase positivity and help you be happy and stay happy.

I wish you all the happiness in the world. You deserve it! Spread joy and laughter and feel good about who you are and where your going in life.

Updating My Debut Novel Book Cover

Editing and adding to my novel feels like a big endeavor, however I am very excited about this journey and so happy I can share it with you. If you are someone that loves to read books, any books, even children's books. You are my kind of people. You are my tribe.

My debut novel is filled with adventure, coming of age life lessons, love and loss, and self discovery. Along with a divide in people and class, I think I captured the story of these two main characters that have lived and evolved in my head for several years now. It's pretty crowded in my head now, as I've got many more characters for other novels still floating around up there. But these need two are so wonderful and I have loved them so much, they need to be shared with the world. I think Jha would make the most wonderful new Disney Princess and I am excited to hear readers thoughts on that subject alone. But if I get the boo hoo, no one loved my book. That is ok, an honest review is still a review even if it's not a good one!

Prayer Rebel Zine or book if you prefer #prayerRebel

Do you pray with intention? Do you pray all the time, for everything? If yes, then you are a Prayer Rebel like me. If you are not familiar with praying or maybe feel unsure how to start. I have put into this Prayer zine some easy to understand prayers that you can start with. After a short time you will begin to change your prayers, making them fit your needs and in your words. This zine is meant to help you see how easy it is to pray and worship. The more you pray the closer you will be to our Father in heaven. Blessing and love, See you in heaven.

I enjoy writing and illustrating, but sometimes illustrating gets in the way of my beloved writing. And other times writing gets in the way of my beloved illustrating. Thankfully with all the wonderful Artists and creators out there. We have options to create with a variety of tools, many of which provide commercial use illustrations. Of course you cannot resell a creators art but you can change it and add it to your new creations and then you can indeed sell your new creations. These tools make it so easy to get to the fun of creating. And that is what I enjoy most.

Clear your mind with mindless art #mindlessart

If you just need to do something but don't know what do. Might I suggest you clear your mind with mindless art. It's and old ancient practice. No, No it's not really. ; ) but if I do it enough it could be for me by the time I'm 80! lol, I kid.

This was a fun activity while trying out my new creative brush tip markers. It took me just over two hours to complete but don't worry I speed it up so it can be a mindless watch to good music. This activity goes well with all my other posts on self-care and mindfulness in that you can learn sometimes the simplest things can calm your mind and ease your soul. Give it a try, and no you do not have to make suck a large piece or even be detailed. Just be mindless and color and create. But mostly have fun NOT THINKING.
This is what I learned today

Automatism. In art, automatism refers to creating art without conscious thought, accessing material from the unconscious mind as part of the creative process.

The Perfect Children's Book

I made some color corrections and fixed some spelling error and voila!
I have the perfect Children's book ( in my opinion ;) I am loving how my book

I love, love, love how this book turned out. I am so inspired I am now changing the artwork in my other children's books. This style reminds me as I have said before, it reminds me of The Hungry Little Caterpillar by Eric Carle
A much-loved Author and much-loved series of books.

I would call this book a success if my book were loved by just one child. Creating and writing brings me so much joy. For all my books I use a digital process starting in the procreate app. on my iPad, then I move the files to my PC and use the free online program Krita to convert from RGB to CMYK, then I use Canva to add the words (it's just easier in Canva) I also make the front and back covers in Canva with my own art, and then I download the pdf files for KDP and once reviewed and approved it's ready for print. I order my Authors copy to proof and if perfect I post for sale. If errors, then I go back into the original files and fix the errors until I get it right.

Changing RGB Color Profile To CMYK for Print for a children's picture book

Here is a fun showing of how I change the RGB color profile of my children's book to the CMYK printable color profile

I am working on the page about bees and getting the yellow/gold to look write is a bit of an effort. Even after completing this video, I still had to do some color correcting and return for another round of adjusting. But that is how it goes and if you want your book to look perfect for your reader you will do many more until you are happy with how it looks. Each page of a colorful illustration needs to be scrutinized when going from digital to print. I will add that art applications have gotten much better than way back in 2006 when I first started writing and illustrating children's picture books, I used traditional watercolor and pastels on art paper and transferring that to digital form was impossible for me at that time, which is why those books are not in print...

After I am happy with the illustrations and have converted each page into a CMYK Jpeg file I import the pages into an online program called Canva just for the ease of the program which I am a paying member. I do not know of a free program, though Canva has a free option with limitations... I am not here to promote anything just sharing what works for me and hopefully inspire you along the way.

The program I use is called Krita and it is free open source, of course you can give a donation to the developers if you like. The program competes well with Adobe Photoshop

Drawing digitally is fun when the subject are Seals

Honing your art skills is fun when you choose to practice with cute, adorable seals! Here is a video showing how I draw and paint these cute seals. Some say painting, some say drawing or sketching, and some even say coloring. Whatever your choice, just keep practicing with whatever tools you prefer, and I can promise it will be fun. I use my iPad and the procreate app. really just for the ease, mobility, and lack of needing to wait for paint to dry. Being too impatient, I will eventually have time (I hope, when I retire) to await drying pain. But for now, I indulge in the digital space of an application that virtually mimics real paint be it watercolor, acrylic, oil or other artful substance. I hope you get the art bug and try your hand at creating and drawing, I think everyone needs an outlet to relax and shake off the stressors of life. You can do as you please in a digital art application, there is no fear of wasting precious paint or paper. Just delete and start again!

Making my novel book cover Jimmy Jha

My very first novel book cover, designed by me. A novel written by me.

I am currently working on the last half of my novel, then I will start a first draft edit. I feel so close to the finish line. Seeing the book cover and releasing this to the world definitely motivates me to complete this novel.

I had to design and create my own cover; I could not allow someone else's vision on my book. Not yet, at least for now. Since it is my first novel I feel very much, a helicopter mom. I will coddle and nurture my baby until I feel ready to let go. And then it will be ready for the world.

The cover is showing the two main characters each with their own journey, and some colorful creatures within the story. There are some hard lessons, grief and loss, love, anger, growth and compassion. Through it all people learn to rise above, discovering what is most important in life...

Did I mention the pirates? No? How about the Skywalkers?

This is a novel about overcoming adversity, self-discovery and finding purpose in life. Crossing oceans and learning new ways from new friends.

Let me know if you would like to be a part of the first readers club?
Leave me a comment either here or in my video comment section, link is below to the video same as above.

Once the novel is complete, I will notify you how and where you can get the book for free, in eBook format. I have to learn how to start a free book promotion on Amazon.

Children’s Picture Book Illustrating - a bear and alligator

How many times have you created an artful piece only to grow and improve your process, then cringe at past works?

I do that more often than I want to admit. But that is one of the Malay benefits there are to creating digitally. And in the video above I show you exactly how I change and add new elements or characters or items, if you will to my picture book page. You can see how easy it is to move an element or character around on the page to change the composition or design. This works for whatever kind of design you are creating for. In fact when designers are creating for repeating patters. This is how they move around elements, adding and changing as they work. I do enjoy this process.
My preferred tools are minimal. I use my iPad, the Procreate app.,  and in the app itself I use the number 6 pencil brush which comes in the app. And really often that is all I use. Sometime I will use different brush tools that come free in the Procreate app. But here you see, not much else is required.

If you do not have these tools, no problem, there are many similar apps, both free and for a small fee you can even use on most cell phones. Don’t have access to any digital tools? No worries, grab a pencil, paper, crayons or whatever you got and create the elements pretty much in the same way only you got to be a bit more careful and detailed as erasing can be difficult. Also when doing a traditional element/ art piece it is best to decide on element placement first, do several mock ups or design sketches, nothing to detailed. Just a quick sketch to see how you want your page to look before you start to paint or color in your design. and that is all it takes. If you are doing everything for your book by traditional method, which is how I started. Might I suggest keep in mind where your words will go and stay at least 1 inch away from all edges just to be safe. When you have all the book pages completed, you can staple or glue them together and you have a book! I would love to see your work, link to me here or on you tube etc. Ask me anything and I will do my best to respond timely.

Happy Creating

Deciding Your Genre & Who Your Readers are

I asked AI about book genres and here is what I was given - the link to where AI gathered the information can be viewed by clicking the purple links.

"Book genres are categories into which kinds of literary material are organized. They help readers to find the types of books they enjoy and also assist authors in targeting their work to the appropriate audience. Here are some popular book genres:

  1. Fiction Genres

  2. Non-Fiction Genres

    • Biography: A detailed description of a person’s life.
    • Autobiography: A self-written account of the author’s life.
    • Memoir: A historical account or biography written from personal knowledge.

There are many more genres and sub-genres, and some books may fall into multiple categories. The exact number of genres can vary, with some sources suggesting there are around 50 main genres, and over 16,000 when you take sub-genres into account

Fiction Genres

Here are some of the sub-genres of science fiction:

    1. Hard Science Fiction: This sub-genre focuses on scientific accuracy and detail. It often explores scientific concepts in depth1.
    2. Soft Science Fiction: In contrast to hard science fiction, soft science fiction emphasizes character-driven plots. The scientific aspects are less detailed1.
    3. Military Science Fiction: This sub-genre revolves around military conflicts and themes. Characters are usually part of a military organization1.
    4. Robot Fiction: This sub-genre centers around the science of robotics. It often relates to the work of Isaac Asimov and the ideas advanced in his Robot series1.
    5. Social Science Fiction: This sub-genre extrapolates and critiques future societies, often for the purpose of social satire1.
    6. Space Opera: This sub-genre typically involves long-running series with continuing story arcs, often set in space and involving large-scale fictional events like galactic wars1.
    7. Steampunk: This sub-genre merges science fiction with alternate history and the design aesthetic of the 19th and early 20th Centuries. It often involves the introduction of modern or futuristic concepts into an earlier setting1.

Please note that these are just a few examples, and many science fiction stories can cross the boundaries of several of these sub-genres or even break off into their own unique categories

Note this information has been gathered in part from artificial information and online searches and is available to anyone via online search. I am simply providing the AI generated links.
